In 2013, Richard Candy and Murray Fairclough kick-started a journey that would reinvent the consumption of legal services by thousands of SME's across the UK.
At the time, they were both working for a well-respected national insurance business, Abbey Protection Group, (now owned by Markel International Ltd). Richard was (and still is) the managing director. Murray directed the large in-house legal services function within the business. Spurred on by the success of the in-house legal team, they were in the process of expanding the legal side of the business to become its own, regulated law firm.
It all started when Richard answered a phone call from an insured customer late one evening. She wanted legal help on something outside her policy cover, but didn’t know who to ask or where to go.
That call triggered agreement between Murray and Richard that there had to be a better way to provide any small business with the legal assistance that they needed … and why not be the business to succeed in this?
Murray took the discussion further, leading the two of them into an intense debate about why customers can’t buy legal services like we all buy other products and services online: in an environment of certainty about what’s available, what you’re getting and how much it will cost?
Spurred on by the success of Abbey’s in-house legal team, particularly its market-leading 24/7 legal advice helpline for insured clients, Richard took the decision that they would expand the legal side of Abbey’s business to become its own, regulated law firm. It was a decision that proved highly popular amongst Abbey’s insurance clients.
It’s a journey because reinventing legal services to keep pace with our customers and the modern world requires a continuous, open-minded commitment to evolution. One that we’ve grown somewhat obsessive about!
A key element of this reinvention was a brand new way of consuming legal services on-line, elXtr. First launched on Valentine’s Day 2016, and loosely based on an information service that Abbey had previously offered to its customers, elXtr made it possible, for the first time ever, for businesses to take a sophisticated, DIY approach to resolving their legal needs with confidence.
Teaming up with Beverley East, LHS’ long-standing director of the highly successful 24/7 legal advice-line, elXtr introduced pay as you go calls to its subscribers, meaning that for those outside of the insurance-covered network, it’s never been easier to phone a legally experienced friend.
Abbey’s claims team and underwriters, clients and business partners, all became willing consultants and guinea pigs, generous with their time, their feedback and their enthusiasm for the challenge that LHS had taken on. We continue very regularly to consult them and our burgeoning community of new members today.
Throughout the UK, elXtr made friends fast – both with those who wanted to be members and those who saw the platform as a great distribution opportunity themselves. Early collaborations with some incredible business brands led to a distinct, now permanent and growing addition of award-winning business experts on elXtr, offering exclusive business solutions at special prices to elXtr members.
And making all of it happen required a core team with multiple talents, real passion and commitment, prepared to roll up their sleeves and go far beyond traditional job descriptions to make it work. This team was - and still is - 'something else'.
This is LHS’ journey to making real law easy. And it is elXtr’s journey too.
Welcome to our world. Real law, made easy.
